The world is evolving rapidly, as are the skills required to maintain national security. The size and calibre of the U.S. Army provide an opportunity to invest in developing a skilled workforce capable of filling workforce shortages across various sectors. Consider the following:
Automation and Artificial Intelligence: Around 47 per cent of jobs in the United States could face possible automation within the next two decades due to advances in artificial intelligence and automation technologies. Equipping soldiers with skills that align with these evolving technologies is essential.
Cybersecurity: By 2021, an estimated 3.5 million cybersecurity jobs will remain unfilled. The Army now relies more than ever on cybersecurity officers to protect military networks and critical infrastructure.
STEM Fields: By 2022, there will be over 9 million science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs, making it challenging for employers to find qualified talent. Many service members already possess STEM-related experience, making them valuable assets in the civilian job market.
Truck Drivers Shortage: By 2030, the U.S. will face a shortage of over 160,000 truck drivers. Service members who have operated large vehicles globally can address this shortage, but they often lack the required credentials upon leaving the military.
Despite these opportunities, transitioning from military training to civilian employment is not always seamless. Many veterans report feeling unprepared for civilian life, particularly possessing the necessary skills and credentials.
Modern national security relies heavily on capabilities in cyber, space operations, advanced analytics, and technology. Therefore, educational and training opportunities must be provided to equip military personnel with marketable skills and credentials to succeed in civilian careers.
In 2019, the Army partnered with Deloitte to develop ArmyIgnitED, an agency-wide program to replace outdated platforms. This initiative, supported by ACCESS and ArmyU and promoted by the Sergeant Major of the Army, seeks to offer soldiers a flexible and mobile solution. It enables them to acquire marketable skills without committing to a traditional four-year college education, though that option remains available.
The ArmyIgnitED platform grants soldiers quick and efficient access to in-person and virtual training and voluntary educational programs. Deloitte collaborated closely with credentialing vendors and training providers to ensure user-friendliness. Additionally, feedback from the Army education counsellor community was incorporated to enhance the support provided to soldiers throughout the counselling process.
