Digital 3D Orientation and Tilt Sensors (DTS)

Inertial Labs began production of the family of Digital 3D Orientation and Tilt Sensors in 2009 in response to application needs requiring low-cost dependable solutions for pitch and roll, and optionally magnetic heading. The DTS (formally OS3D) product family are lightweight, ultra low power consuming, and designed to be easily integrated with development systems and rugged platforms.

The DTS family features a Software Development Kit commonly used in university studies, research and development programs, and industrial (construction) fields. Additionally, the OS3D family is ITAR-free and exportable to available countries. Now end users can replace unnecessarily expensive inclinometers and tilt sensors with a product that is both reliable and backed by the Inertial Labs Support Team.

2. Uses for the 3D Orientation and Digital Tilt Sensors

  • Construction Site Equipment Tilt Sensing

Majority of construction site equipment is designed to be as rugged and durable as possible. When it comes to safety however there seems to be a shortage of proper sensors to monitor when equipment such as Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP’s) or bulldozers and excavators are oriented or tilted to dangerous levels, shifting the center of gravity and resulting in equipment tipping or rolling. The low-cost DTS sensors are used to detect and alert workers when a platform such as an MEWP or excavator has exceeded a threshold of operational safety, putting the operator as risk.

  • Virtual Reality and Motion Capture Systems

The OS3DM is an ideal low-cost solution for virtual reality and motion capture systems. Calculation of heading is necessary in many man wearable suits to be able to monitor position and to track body movement. The DTS line of sensors can be used as stand-alone units or link them together to create a seamless platform for motion capture on any platform, static or dynamic.

  • Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (MUAV)

The drone racing industry is the ideal end user for the DTS sensor family. Light weight and ruggedly designed the OS3DM calculates heading with an accuracy of 2 degrees in dynamic applications. Since drone users rely on solutions that draw as little power as possible while still supplying a reliable solution, the OS3DM meets the demand. With a maximum power consumption of only 0.13 Watts, drone enthusiasts can now better optimize drone speed, battery life and maneuverability.

  • Medical Training and Biomechanics

Especially in the field of Biomedical Engineering, traditionally used accelerometers and gyroscopes are not enough to identify movement patterns in humans or animals. The use of magnetometers has been proven to be essential in solving for unknowns when subjects are responding with low-acceleration behaviors. An example of this is seen in modeling Thermal Soaring in birds. The DTS has proven to be a robust, filtered solution that can easily be mounted in any orientation and calibrated for its environment. Due to it’s lightweight nature, engineers and conservationists alike prefer the DTS for its small and unobtrusive orientation solutions.
